Soda Can Tabs
A living research archive exploring the creative reuse of aluminium beverage can tabs as decorative, structural, and symbolic elements within contemporary recycled art and sustainable design.
Designed to open a drink and immediately discarded, the humble can tab has become one of the most versatile materials in my studio. Its elegant geometry, lightweight strength, and reflective surface allow it to become jewellery, ornamentation, texture, and storytelling within my artworks.

Small Objects With Endless Possibilities
The pull tab was engineered for convenience, yet its life typically ends within seconds of opening a beverage. In my creative practice, this small aluminium component begins a second journey. Its clean curves, central opening, and metallic finish make it ideal for creating repeating patterns, layered textures, decorative borders, and sculptural details.
Rather than being hidden, the identity of the tab remains visible, reminding viewers of its previous purpose while celebrating its transformation.
Geometry Already Designed By Industry
Unlike many reclaimed materials that require extensive cutting or reshaping, soda can tabs arrive with a refined, consistent form. Their repeated shape allows me to create rhythm, movement, and intricate visual structures while preserving the identity of the original object.
Each tab represents a small reminder that thoughtful design can continue long after an item’s original purpose has ended.

Creative Possibilities
Working With Uniform Repetition

Beauty Hidden In Repetition
One soda can tab may seem insignificant. Hundreds assembled together reveal unexpected elegance. Working with these small components reminds me that creative impact often emerges through patience, repetition, and attention to detail rather than through scale alone.
Design Beyond Disposal
Every beverage can tab carries value that extends beyond its brief function. Reclaiming these components demonstrates how thoughtful observation can uncover beauty within the smallest pieces of everyday waste, encouraging more responsible attitudes toward consumption and design.
Questions Guiding My Exploration
- Can soda can tabs become primary structural elements rather than decorative accents?
- How can repeated industrial forms create organic visual rhythms?
- What large-scale installations could emerge from thousands of reclaimed tabs?
- Can aluminium tabs become accessible materials for community art education?
- How might jewellery techniques expand their creative potential?
