Drywall Screws

A living research archive documenting the creative use of drywall screws as both structural fasteners and expressive visual elements within contemporary mixed-media artworks made from reclaimed materials.

In construction, drywall screws disappear beneath paint. In my work, they remain visible. They become part of the artwork’s language—holding, connecting, decorating, and revealing the process behind each creation rather than concealing it.

Beyond Construction

From Hidden Hardware To Artistic Language

Drywall screws are designed to disappear behind walls, wood, and plaster. Within my creative practice they are intentionally left visible, becoming part of the visual rhythm of each composition. Their circular heads create repeating patterns while their strength allows recycled materials to be securely joined without compromising the artwork’s aesthetic.

Why I Use Them

Strength That Can Be Seen

Many assemblage artists hide their structural supports. I often choose the opposite approach. The screws become evidence of craftsmanship and honest construction, reminding viewers that transformation is built through labour, patience, and careful assembly.

Their industrial appearance also creates a compelling contrast with softer materials such as beads, cowries, fabric, flowers, eggshells, and recycled plastics.

Precision Matters

Because many reclaimed materials are fragile, every screw must be positioned carefully to prevent splitting, cracking, or unnecessary pressure. Balancing strength with delicacy has become an essential part of my construction process.

Studio Notes

Holding Stories Together

A screw is often overlooked because it performs its job quietly. Yet without it, many structures would fail. I see drywall screws in much the same way—as humble elements that quietly hold together ambitious ideas, allowing reclaimed materials to become unified works of art.

Environmental Reflection

Small Components, Lasting Impact

Sustainability is not only about the large materials we reuse but also the smaller components that allow those materials to function together. Recognising the value of every element encourages more intentional making and reduces unnecessary waste.

Future Research

Questions Guiding My Exploration

  • Can exposed fasteners become decorative motifs in contemporary art?
  • How can structural hardware contribute to visual storytelling?
  • What new surface patterns emerge through repeated screw placement?
  • How can industrial materials coexist with delicate recycled elements?
  • Can visible construction techniques become part of an artwork’s identity?
