Material Testing & Experimentation

A living research archive documenting the experimental processes that allow reclaimed materials to evolve from ordinary waste into dependable artistic resources through observation, testing, adaptation, and continuous innovation.

Every material enters my studio as a question rather than an answer. Can it bend? Can it endure? Can it accept paint? Can it become something entirely different? Experimentation transforms discarded objects into creative opportunities, making research one of the most important materials in my practice.

Research Before Creation

Every Artwork Begins As An Experiment

Before reclaimed materials appear in a finished artwork, they undergo a process of observation and testing. Some materials reveal unexpected strengths. Others become fragile when altered. Many behave differently depending on moisture, temperature, adhesives, paints, or mechanical stress. Each experiment expands my understanding of what these materials are capable of becoming.

Failure Is Part Of Discovery

Not every experiment succeeds. Some materials crack unexpectedly. Others reject adhesives or pigments. Certain combinations become unstable over time. Rather than viewing these outcomes as mistakes, they become valuable research that guides future decisions and strengthens subsequent artworks.

Projects Emerging From Material Research

Studio Reflection

Curiosity Is My Most Valuable Tool

Every discarded material carries possibilities hidden beneath its original purpose. Experimentation allows those possibilities to emerge. Research transforms assumptions into evidence, while curiosity transforms waste into artistic opportunity. My studio therefore functions as both a creative workshop and an evolving research laboratory.

Innovation Reduces Waste

The more we understand reclaimed materials, the less we discard them. Every successful experiment expands the range of materials that can be creatively reused, reducing dependence on newly manufactured resources while encouraging more sustainable approaches to artistic practice.

Future Research

Questions Guiding My Exploration

  • Which overlooked waste materials possess untapped artistic potential?
  • How do different reclaimed materials interact over long periods?
  • Can experimental construction methods improve sustainability?
  • Which combinations offer the greatest structural stability?
  • How can documented failures become future innovations?
