Rhinestones
A living research archive exploring rhinestones as decorative embellishments that introduce brilliance, contrast, symbolism, and visual elegance into contemporary mixed-media artworks created from reclaimed materials.
Light has always fascinated artists. Rhinestones allow light itself to become part of the composition. Placed beside weathered cardboard, discarded aluminium, plastic waste, and reclaimed objects, their sparkle creates a powerful reminder that beauty often emerges from unexpected places.

Creating Brilliance Through Reflection
Unlike paint, rhinestones do not create colour. Instead, they capture and reflect surrounding light. Their constantly changing appearance introduces movement into otherwise static artworks, allowing each viewing experience to become slightly different depending on the light and viewing angle.
Elegance Can Exist Beside Waste
One of the central ideas within my creative practice is that reclaimed materials deserve dignity. Rhinestones reinforce this belief by introducing moments of brilliance into compositions built from discarded objects. Their presence creates visual tension between luxury and waste, encouraging viewers to question traditional ideas of value and beauty.

Creative Properties
Knowing When To Sparkle
Rhinestones demand restraint. Too few may go unnoticed. Too many may overwhelm the artwork. Successful use depends upon balance, allowing brilliance to complement the narrative rather than compete with it.

A Small Spark Can Transform Everything
Some of the smallest materials often make the strongest visual impact. A carefully placed rhinestone can guide the viewer’s eye, introduce emotion, or completely change the atmosphere of a composition. Its value lies not in its size, but in its ability to interact with light.
Redefining Luxury
Luxury is often associated with expensive materials. My work proposes another possibility. When rhinestones are combined with reclaimed objects, they suggest that elegance is not determined by cost but by imagination, craftsmanship, and thoughtful design.
Questions Guiding My Exploration
- How does reflected light influence emotional responses to recycled art?
- Can embellishment become a storytelling device rather than decoration?
- How much visual sparkle is enough to strengthen a narrative?
- What relationships emerge between luxury materials and reclaimed waste?
- Can light itself become a sculptural material within mixed media?
